Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances that affect every aspect of your health. There are over 30 different types that have been identified so far. These hormone-like substances fall into three main categories, depending on which fatty acid they are made from.

Series 1 prostaglandin is made from omega-6.

Series 2 prostaglandin is made from Arachidonic Acid (AA).

Series 3 prostaglandin is made from omega-3.

Each series has a different function within the body, having far reaching consequences on every cell.

Series 1 PGE keeps blood platelets from sticking together, helping to prevent heart attacks due to clots in our arteries. PGE 1 helps the kidneys remove sodium and excess fluid from the body. It relaxes the blood vessels, improves circulation lowers blood pressure and relieves angina. PGE 1 even slows down the production of cholesterol (our liver produces about 70% our cholesterol the rest comes from our diet). It decreases inflammatory responses helping to control pain. Makes insulin work more effectively, helping diabetes. It improves nerve function producing a sense of well-being. Regulates calcium metabolism, improves the function of the T-cells in our immune system. And from a pain and inflammatory point of view PGE 1 helps to prevent the release of arachidonic acid from our cell membranes.

Series 2 – PGE 2 promotes platelet aggregation, which is the first step in a blood clot formation. PGE 2 encourages the kidneys to retain salt leading to fluid retention and high blood pressure. These prostaglandins also encourage inflammation and hence pain.

Series 3 – PGE 3 also prevents arachidonic acid from being released from cell membranes, therefore preventing PGE 2 from being made. This explains why fish can prevent degeneration of the cardiovascular system, fluid retention, and reduce inflammation.

For a better balance – we need plenty of essential fatty acids plus a good supple of vitamins and minerals like C, B3, B6, magnesium, and zinc. Cut down on your meat consumption as it is a rich source of arachidonic acid and at the same time increase your intake of plant foods of all types.

Increase your consumption of –

Hemp seeds

Flaxseeds (linseeds)

Borage capsules

Evening primrose capsules

Walnuts

Almonds

Sesame

Sunflower

Pumpkin

All fruits and vegetables

Do you know what lectins are? You may have heard of ricin, its a highly toxic substance. What might surprise you is that it occurs naturally in castor bean. The very beans used to make castor oil.

In 1998 experiments with genetically-modified potatoes caused a problem as they damaged the brains and immune systems of rats that ate them. It was the lectins found in the potatoes that were the problem and did the damage. How did this happen? Potatoes were modified with the genes from a South African bean known to be toxic to insect, and evidently rats. They thought this would make the plant insect proof. Lectins are found in varying degrees in plants and animals, some are obviously very powerful, other are so weak they are not worth mentioning.

Peter D’Adamo ND talks about lectins in his books on blood types, and how they can affect us in different ways. Lectins are glycoproteins that can agglutinate cells, meaning lectins act like superglue sticking cells together, acting like an enzymes which means it doesn’t take part but evokes a change. Lectins usually effect red or white blood cells but frankly they can affect cells of any organ like the kidneys, pancreas, or liver etc. Our intestinal lining is exposed every time we eat. It has been found the affect lectins have on cells of the gut and bacteria of the intestines causes a cascade of reactions within the body.

Lectins are found in quite high levels in beans in general and in peanuts (which are legumes), this way so many people have problems with these foods. However, if the beans have been cooked at high enough temperatures for long enough the lectins will have been inactivated. But a lot escape cooking and digestion to end up in the blood stream to reek havoc on the immune system. Then there are foods when cooked – the lectins levels are increased for instance in cooked banana, carrots, or corn.

Then there are many common foods (cooked or not) that contain lectins that can inactivate digestive enzymes for instance in avocado, apples, bananas, wheat, tomato, carrots, corn and lettuce.

As for as arthritis is concerned lectins are inflammatory, ultimately causing histamine and other inflammatory mediators to be released. this thought to be the root of many food intolerances triggering a hyper-permeability which leads to auto-immune diseases like arthritis. As these compounds cross the gut wall into the main circulation they interfere with the body’s hormone balance, metabolism and health in general.

Go easy on the foods mentioned above.

1 Watch your weight. Being overweight can contribute to a life shortening disease like diabetes or heart disease.

2 Laugh, laugh, laugh. A 100 laugh is worth a 10 minute jog – beside it makes to feel good and produces happy chemicals. Laughing generally has a healthy positive effect on life expectancy.

3 Get a pet. Research revealed that owners of cats and dogs visit the doctor less often and suffer less stress. The dog came out on top for giving the best results.

4 Relaxation techniques like yoga, Pilates, meditation have proven to reduce stress and extend years.

5 Try to maintain a good relationship with your mother. Research revealed those who didn’t were more likely to develop heart disease or other problems.

6 Check your breasts regularly that goes for both men and women.

7 Optimists win out on all counts, life is more fun, they suffer less colds and flu, and live up to a whopping 12 years longer than pessimists.

8 Forget whale watching take up mole watching. Look out for moles that change, change in size or colour, if they become raised or begin to weep. Get the mole checked immediately.

9 Apparently if you are married or in a relationship that is happy and stable and the longer the marriage or relationship the better the life expectancy.

10 Winning awards, prizes, achievements or qualifications helped increase life expectancy. These can be undertaken and achieved at any age.

11 Learning a new skill like a new language or musical instrument generally had a positive effect and adds years to your life.

12 Having a good social life whether retired or not, extends the years to your life.

13 Get cooking, it’s a great past time, with enormous health benefits.

14 Get moving anyway that suites you. Be it yoga, walking, Pilates, the gym, the pool, just get moving and to increase your years.

15 Get enough anti-oxidants to slow down aging by eating a minimum of 5 fresh fruit and vegetables each day.

16 Get the right fats, the essential fatty acids from oily fish, seeds, and cold pressed oils like extra virgin olive oil.

17 Go to the dentist regularly; if you can’t chew food properly your digestion will be compromised and will be tempted to make poor food choices.

18 For optimum years get 6 to 8 hour sleep, getting less than 4 and more than 9 hours will shorten your life according to research.

19 Drinking green and red tea regularly will help to increase life expectancy as they both contain powerful anti-oxidants.

20 Last but not least, mind over matter don’t think old.

Besides helping your body deal with stress this herb has other amazing health properties’, making it a very noteworthy addition to your supplement program, protecting you from life’s daily hassles. Remember anything that helps the body to cope and reduce stress will help to reduce pain.

Traditionally it comes from Siberia way up above sea level, used for centuries throughout Asia and China. Historically it was highly prized and valued as a versatile herbal tonic to increase strength and stamina, as opposed to treating a particular disease. In Russia there was a saying – people who drink rhodiola tea will live to a 100. The herb is also known as golden root or arctic root.

During World War II the Russians developed extracts that they would give to the soldiers to enhance their abilities. Research showed that it would help boost the body’s resistance enabling them to cope with physical and environmental stress, presumably the bitter cold and hunger.

This herb is officially known as an ‘adaptogenic herb’, meaning it arms the body with the ability to cope with stress, improve performance and encourage disease resistance. It helps the body maintain normal modus operandi even under stress.

We all know stress can have a negative effect on our immune system, making us more vulnerable to infections like cold and flu. However, rhodiola helps to strengthen the immune system making you less susceptible.

This herb can protect the organs like the heart from damage by reducing the amount of corticosteroids, a stress hormone released by the adrenal glands during stressful times. It is thought that rhodiola’s ability to support the adrenal glands also has a positive effect on blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar levels. It is well known that exercise is good for you but it is a form of stress to the body, here again rhodiola has proven invaluable to athletes helping to increase their stamina and speed up recovery time after training. Russian scientists have done a lot of research in this area, using rhodiola some years ago now to give the Russian athletes an edge.

People were given rhodiola to see how it would affect fatigue and memory loss. Most people noticed an improvement in their symptoms and found productivity at work had improved after taking this herb for about 2 weeks. Rhodiola seems to protect the brain and its important mood enhancing chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin is important for sleep, stable moods, appetite, memory and lower levels have been linked to depression. It would seem rhodiola contains plant compounds that enhance the production of serotonin and at the same time preserve serotonin levels due to its ability to block the action of an enzyme that breaks down serotonin.

It is possible to take this herb in capsule or tablet form I take the dried root in a tea. It is a good herb to take long term as a tonic, always follow the dosage recommended on the packaging.

If you are going through a particularly stressful time, there are a few other simple things you could be doing. Be kind to your adrenal glands by cutting right down on your caffeine and sugar consumption, both are stressful to the body and overwork the adrenal glands.

The body uses up a lot of vitamin C during stressful times, vitamin C also helps the adrenal glands to cope better so increase your intake of vitamin C capsules and increase your consumption of fruit and vegetables.

Take regular walks get some fresh air, UVs and listen to some relaxing music.

As we age our digestion struggles a bit more each decade, things we ate when we were young are now proving to cause discomfort and even pain. People automatically think if they have indigestion it must be acid problems and reach for antacids. Yes it could well be a acid problem but often the reverse of what you think.

Often acid levels are a little on the low side causing digestive discomfort, and taking antacids will make this situation worse. We need correct level of stomach acid to digest protein properly, so that bacteria are destroyed, so minerals like calcium are broken down enough to allow absorption and utilization.

TEST There is a simple test you can do at home for pennies.

Take a level teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda dissolved in some water (about 3 to 4oz) you should drink this immediately on an empty stomach.

THE RESULT The bicarbonate of soda should be converted into gases by you stomach acid, causing significant bloating and belching within five to ten minutes.

If there is little or no belching, this would indicate low stomach acid.

WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? One tablespoon of good quality of organic apple cider vinegar in a little water 30 minutes before a meal. Apple Cider Vinegar helps to encourage better levels of Hydrochloric acid levels in a totally natural and gentle way for better digestion.
